Lawn Drainage

Having the proper drainage is important for the health of the lawn. You can install a lawn drainage system that will really help with any problems of standing water on the grass. While water is necessary for a great looking lawn, too much water will cause the grass to rot and this could leave brown patches in the grass. The system is installed under the lawn, but there must be a way for the water to travel from the surface of the lawn to the drain.

Drainage systems work by taking the water from the highest to the lowest point. This means that you really do have to look at the lay of your land and decide where the system will work best. For example, you can have the water run to a ditch or let it soak away. The fall should be no less than 1 to 200 in the direction in which you want the water to flow. There should be at least 10mm fall for every meter of pipe that you lay.

Mark out an area of the lawn where you want to install the drainage system. Using sand lets you easily see where the drain p0ipes will lie and then you can cut out the strips of sod. Dig out the trench for the pipes. If you use a lawn trenching tool, the job will be much easier. You should start at a depth of about 400 mmand then slope in the direction of the water flow. You can use the garden hose to test how the water flows before you lay the pipes.

When you lay the drainage pipe in place fill it with stones and then with the dirt you took from the trench. Make a series of slits from the drainage pipes and fill them with sand to allow more water to drain off if there is too much for the pipes to handle.
